Carex pensylvanica - PENSYLVANIA SEDGE 'STRAW HAT'

Sale price$0.00

Tanya’s Take I have observed but not grown this. This deep green grass is semi-evergreen with graceful 1' blades. Try this is plant for your dry shade areas.

Special features of Carex Semi-evergreen and sedges in general are not attractive to deer. Could be used as a replacement for liriope, as Carex make good front of the border edger plants.

Pollinators served Bees and smaller pollinators

Color and texture Spreading dense clumps

Flowers Spring spikelets are held above the leaves early summer

Height around 1'

Sun, part shade or shade? Part to full shade

Soil moisture Average to dry

Preferred soils  Well drained high organic matter soil

Is it a bully? No. It's rhizomes slowly expand to form attractive clumps

Drought tolerance Does well in average or dry shade.

Toughness rating Unknown to me, but I suspect it's pretty adaptable given where I've seen it growing. I've known people to use this as a lawn alternative.

Should you give this plant a try Yes!  If you have a shady spot that needs some love I'd give it a go! (Actually, I am going to try all the Carex's in this sale.)

Is this native Yup. Entire east coast including DC, MD and VA
