Carex appalachica - APPALACHIAN SEDGE

Sale price$0.00

Tanya’s Take I have grown this Carex and I love it. I found it in the bone dry shade of a peach tree, and moved it to a bone dry part sun location under a tree and it has done very well. It's evergreen for me, has interesting and fun seed heads.

Special features of Carex Semi-evergreen and sedges in general are not attractive to deer. Could be used as a replacement for liriope, as Carex make good front of the border edger plants.

Pollinators served Bees and smaller pollinators

Color and texture Clump forming, very fine textured grass.

Flowers Spring spikelets are held above the leaves early summer

Height 6-12"

Sun, part shade or shade? Part to full shade. Mine gets burning afternoon sun and it doesn't mind at all.

Soil moisture Average to dry. Not picky.

Preferred soils  Mine does well in my sorta compacted urban crappy soil. Avoid wet mucky soils.

Is it a bully? No. It's rhizomes slowly and the clumps get a little bigger. Divides well in spring.

Drought tolerance High.

Toughness rating Extremely tough. I ignore this plant and it's a winner.

Should you give this plant a try Yes! I'd try it pretty much anywhere except for wet, boggy places. (Actually, I am going to try all the Carex's in this sale based on this Carex's performance for me.)

Is this native Yup. Entire east coast including DC, MD and VA
