Symphyotrichum lateriflorus 'Lady in Black' - ASTER 'LADY IN BLACK'

Sale price$3.75

Tanya’s Take I have not grown this native cultivar but my experience with the straight species is that it is an adaptable and beautiful late season pollinator magnet. It is a shrubby aster with dark stems and plum tinged leaves.

Pollinators served Plants host caterpillars of the Pearl Crescent and Checkerspot Butterflies.

Color and texture Medium texture, stiff multi-stemmed perennial

Flowers Pink and purple

Height around 3'

Sun, part shade or shade? Sun to part shade

Soil moisture Dry, average, moist

Preferred soils  Adaptable

Is it a bully? This is probably an assertive aster given it's size. As with all asters, dividing regularly is key.

Drought tolerance Probably pretty good, as most asters are highly adaptable. Probably does best in moist to average soils.

Toughness rating Asters are tough in general. I wouldn't expect this one to be different.

Should you give this plant a try? Asters are tried and true late season performers with abundant glorious blooms that beckon butterflies, bees and beetles galore.

Is this native?  Yes to DC, MD and VA
