Eutrochium maculatum SPOTTED JOE PYE WEED

Sale price$3.00

Tanya’s Take:  This plant is a thing of wonder.  It's big, so think foundation planting near your house or along a fence that you want to look more attractive.  Think of it like a medium sized shrub.

Pollinators served: Special value for bees.  Attracts birds and butterflies. Nectar source.  This plant is a buffet!

Color and texture:  Vertical cluster of stalks with longish pointy leaves.  Medium texture.

Flowers:  Fall bloomer with pink/purple clusters of long lasting blooms. Great seed heads too.

Height:  4-6'

Sun, part shade or shade?:   Sun-part shade.

Soil moisture While considered a wetland plant, i've found it highly adaptable.  It grows fine in average moisture garden soil and seems unfazed by times of drought once established.

Preferred soils Highly adaptable it's fine in wet mucky soil to average garden soil.

Is it a bully?  It expands at a reasonable rate by dense roots.

Drought tolerance: Very adaptable when established. While considered a wetland plant I have it planted along a partial/mostly shade fence and it doesn't bat an eye. It's pretty wonderful.

Toughness rating: Tough as nails.

Should you give this plant a try: Yes. Really a useful plant.  Don't be dissuaded by it's size.

Is this native:  Yup. Entire east coast including DC, MD and VA
